Horsehair-Fired Terra Sigillata Vessel – A Dance of Flame & Smoke
A stunning fusion of delicate craftsmanship and the raw power of fire, this 6 x 7.5-inch vessel is a testament to the beauty of primitive firing techniques. Created using a combination of wheel-thrown and slab-formed clay, its form is both organic and intentional, reflecting the balance between structure and spontaneity.
Coated in rich red terra sigillata and meticulously burnished to a velvety sheen, the surface captures the warmth of the earth. The vessel was then adorned with horsehair, which burned into the clay upon contact, leaving behind intricate, unpredictable black veining. Finally, a mist of ferric chloride added an ethereal glow, deepening the natural blush and smoky patina.
With its elegantly fractured rim and fluid, fire-kissed surface, this vessel is more than a functional form—it's a story of transformation, an artifact of fire, and a one-of-a-kind sculpture meant to be cherished.
